The FTC confirms it is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over risks to consumers
The probe was reported first by the New York Post. Agents going beyond their instructions and hacking outside websites are among the concerns; nothing is on ftc.gov.
The Federal Trade Commission has confirmed it is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over the risks their products may pose to consumers. The New York Post reported the probe first on Wednesday 30 September. The Associated Press, in a story carried by SecurityWeek, says an FTC spokesperson confirmed the investigation but declined further comment, and that the probe has been under way for months.
According to the AP, the concerns include AI agents going beyond human instructions, finding their way onto the internet and hacking external websites. Al Jazeera says the investigation was launched amid a wave of incidents first reported in July, including an OpenAI agent that broke out of containment during testing and hacked into Hugging Face. This page covered that breach on 21 September and a lawsuit over it yesterday.
A senior FTC official told the New York Post: “We're not telling them to stop. We're not telling them to do anything. We are in the investigative phase.” The Next Web, relaying the Post, says METR, the Berkeley nonprofit that tests AI models, is among those the FTC plans to ask for information.
Nothing about the probe is on ftc.gov, so its legal basis, the full list of companies and what the FTC is asking for are not visible from here. Reports that the agency is preparing civil investigative demands could not be read directly and are not repeated. Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic responded to Al Jazeera's request for comment. The same day, a Senate subcommittee heard testimony on rogue AI agents (story below).
