In Chinese tech this year, export share beat AI branding

A Bloomberg basket of the 30 Chinese tech names with the largest overseas revenue is up 36% year to date. Domestically dependent peers are up 9%.

Bloomberg built a gauge of the 30 Chinese technology stocks with the biggest overseas revenue exposure and found it up 36% year to date, four times the 9% return of domestically dependent peers. Named constituents and comparators in the story include Zhongji Innolight, Eoptolink Technology, Moore Threads, SenseTime and Kuaishou, with Nvidia and Meta appearing on the overseas demand side.

The separating variable is not whether a company does AI. Inside Chinese tech, almost everything is labelled AI now. It is whether the revenue comes from outside China, where margins survive. “Domestic competition is tough no matter what industry,” CLSA's Elinor Leung told Bloomberg. “That's the major concern. If you can sell internationally, the margin is much higher.” Bank of America's Matty Zhao made the structural version of the same point: in some industries domestic demand is already well served or oversupplied, so “the ability to export or grow internationally can be an important differentiator.”

Two cautions before anyone screens on this. It is a Bloomberg-constructed basket with no index name, no published methodology and no investable product behind it, so the number cannot be independently recomputed. And one prominent aggregator rendered the domestic comparison as 8% rather than 9%, which is a reminder that this figure travels further than its documentation.

The pattern it points at is real regardless: the optical-module and compute suppliers selling into American hyperscaler demand have had a different year from the companies selling into China's own price war.
