Amazon opens Seller Central's data and actions to outside AI agents, Claude first
A Selling Partner Plugin lets third-party assistants read a seller's listings, inventory, performance and ad data and act on the seller's behalf. It is generally available in Amazon's own assistant and in beta for Claude, US stores first. Every action needs human approval.
The significant thing is the direction of the opening. Amazon is exposing the merchant back end — not the storefront — to agents it does not own. The plugin surfaces Seller Assistant's intelligence inside third-party AI platforms, where it can read seller data including listings, performance metrics, inventory and sales analytics, and take actions for the seller. Amazon's stated vision, from its VP of worldwide selling partner experience, was that sellers would never have to log into Seller Central at all. That is a deliberate concession that the console is no longer where the work happens.
Two guardrails do the governance work, and both are Amazon's own design choices rather than regulatory requirements. All actions require human approval — the agent proposes, the seller confirms. And Amazon states the plugin cannot share seller data outside Amazon's infrastructure, and cannot operate without seller-defined guardrails and audit trails. That combination makes this a controlled aperture rather than an open API: an outside model gets to reason over the data and recommend, but the write path stays gated.
The rollout is narrower than the headlines suggest. The plugin is generally available in Amazon's own assistant; for Anthropic's Claude it is in beta, US stores first, with international expansion planned. Alongside it Amazon shipped an upgraded Seller Assistant with persistent memory of a seller's business patterns, and Seller Assistant Workflows for round-the-clock automated monitoring and task execution — the always-on component, where agent behaviour stops being a chat session and becomes a standing process.
The commercial move underneath is distribution bought with a giveaway: a free twelve-month subscription for all primary selling account holders globally, available through 31 December 2026. The adoption figures Amazon cites are all self-reported and should be read that way — Seller Assistant rolled out to over 90% of selling partners, recommendations accepted over 90% of the time, and 90% of selling partners already using third-party AI tools. That last figure is the actual rationale. If nine in ten sellers are already pasting Amazon data into outside models by hand, Amazon would rather own the pipe.
